When something, anything, (e.g. a letter, an email, a brochure, a report, a proposal, an advertisement, an article, notes of a meeting, a request, a poster, an essay, or ...) is written poorly, it reflects on the writer and the quality or usefulness of what the writer is offering or saying. Sloppy writing = sloppy deal. Grammatical mistakes = poor intelligence. An advertising flyer that doesn't make sense = a business that doesn't know what it's talking about. Who does they refer to?

They appears twice in the sentence. Does they refer to the people who can influence, or to the people who can be influenced, or to one for the first they,
and the other for the second?

Here are some examples of how to take out the ambiguity in the sentence:

People can influence others if they think they should comply.

Someone who thinks you should comply with them, can influence you to comply.

If you think you should comply with someone, you will let them influence you.
